A qualification in either MCSE or MCSA requires a thorough knowledge of the administration of Windows operating systems, maintaining servers and network infrastructure. Initially, the choice between the two can often be a difficult choice to make.
There are a few important differences between the MCSA and MCSE courses and their requirements. For starters Microsoft recommends that those undertaking MCSE have at least one years’ prior experience compared with the 6-12 months stated for MCSA.
In addition to requiring less previous experience the MCSA usually takes around half the time to complete; around 4 to 6 months. This is contrasted with 8 to 12 months for completion of the MCSE.
Evidently, MCSE Training is longer because the syllabus is more comprehensive, however this may not necessarily lead to higher earnings; rather a differing career path.
According to Microsoft, MCSE training is geared more towards those seeking a career in the planning and implementation of servers whereas MCSA is focused primarily on maintaining, troubleshooting and managing existing network operating systems.
To put it simply: MCSA certificates do not emphasize or develop design skills and MCSE training does.
This means that the choice of course depends exclusively on the needs of the individual rather than one being superior to the other, with MCSE Training offering specialization in a variety of topics in order to focus on specific interests and equip professionals with specific skills.
Once the course is completed and the student is Microsoft Certified a whole host of opportunities arise. Newly Microsoft Certified individuals are highly sought after in the job market and lucrative salaries are on offer to those with an understanding of servers and network operating systems.
MCSE and MCSA training is obviously no substitute for hands on practical knowledge, which is only gained through experience. However a comprehensive awareness of the underlying technologies, alongside hands-on training, is the most effective method to further your career and expertise.
Certification is also the principal way of ensuring potential companies and employers know exactly what you are capable of. Many will profess expert knowledge of operating systems and system maintenance but without training and Microsoft certification this knowledge is impossible to assess solely from a CV.
Microsoft is indisputably one of the biggest and most recognizable corporations in the world, and a MCSA or MCSE Training is a guarantee that you meet and excel the exacting standards of Microsoft. Therefore certification from Microsoft itself is a great asset for anyone serious about a career in any area of IT, and an utterly essential one for those interested in systems engineering or administration.

MCPD Web Developer exam 70-547 hints and tips
Following my post about studying toward
MCPD certification, I’ve now taken the exam and am pleased to say I passed with a good score. The exam 70-547 is about designing and developing web applications using ASP.NET 2.0. It focuses on the full software development lifecycle and covers planning, architecture, design, testing and deployment, where as the prerequisite MCTS exams cover more of the actual coding and implementation details.
My main study guide was the official Microsoft Press book, MCPD Self-Paced
Training Kit (Exam 70-547). It covered the syllabus thoroughly enough to get me
through the exam, but like most similar books wasn’t much fun to read. It’s over
700 pages, and after the first few hundred the content starts to get fairly
monotonous. It’s also difficult to skim because you might miss something
essential for the exam. If you’re an experienced developer then you might not
learn much, but if you’re new to coding then you should find plenty of useful
information about broader areas of software development, such as architecture,
data modelling and unit testing.
A lot of the testing chapters read like an advert for Visual Studio Team System
(VSTS) and aggressively promote its unit testing and web load testing
capabilities. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s a Microsoft exam after all,
but you will need Visual Studio Team Test if you want to work through the
practical exercises (an evaluation version is available). The unit testing in
VSTS is impressive, but doesn’t seem to offer much over the freely available
NUnit. The web load testing on the other hand is invaluable.
My best advice for the book is to read it in short frequent bursts. Try to read
a little bit every day and you’ll easily work through it, so don’t be
intimidated. If you find yourself slacking, just register for the exam and
you’ll soon become motivated. And remember to use the 15% exam discount voucher
that comes with the book.
My other study resource, which I also used for the MCTS exams, was the practice test from Testkingdom.com. The questions are very relevant to the actual exam, and helped highlight areas to focus my study. The most useful feature is that every answer has an explanation, so if you get one wrong you can
see why and hopefully fill a gap in your knowledge.
The exam isn’t easy, but many questions appeal to common sense as well as
technical expertise, and there aren’t any trick questions. There’s more than
enough time to work through the 40 multiple-choice questions, so be careful to
read each one closely and don’t panic. Some questions ask you to pick more than
one answer so follow the instructions carefully. The passing score is 700 out of
1000.
According to Microsoft’s statistics there are only 2,147 MCPD web developers
worldwide, so if you want to improve your skills, stand out in the job market,
or negotiate a promotion then certification could be a great career move.
My next goal is MCTS certification for SQL Server and exam 70–431. Then it
shouldn’t be too long before the next generation of .NET 3.5 MCTS are available.

Cisco CCNA / CCNP Certification: Deciphering Ping Results
As you study for your CCNA and CCNP exams, particularly if you're getting hands-on practice in your home lab or rack rental service, you're going to be sending a lot of pings. As a CCNA or CCNP candidate, you know that five exclamation points (!!!!!) as a ping return indicates that you have IP connectivity to the remote destination. Five periods (.....) indicates that you do not have that connectivity.
It's not enough to know that you don't have IP connectivity to the remote device, you've got to know why. Ping is a great first step to network troubleshooting, but the results are quite limited. As a CCNA and CCNP, you've got to know how to diagnose the problem and resolve it. Just looking at the routing table is not enough - a high-powered Cisco debug, debug ip packet, can often show you exactly where the problem is.
WARNING: debug ip packet should not be run on any production router without understanding the effect of this command on your router. This command results in a lot of output and can actually lock up a router.
In this case, we'll run the command on a home lab router that cannot ping 22.2.2.2. The debug will be turned on and another ping sent.
R1#debug ip packet
IP packet debugging is on
R1#ping 22.2.2.2
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 22.2.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
3d23h: IP: s=1.1.1.1 (local), d=22.2.2.2, len 100, unroutable.
R1#undebug all
All possible debugging has been turned off
I've edited this output for clarity; the important word is "unroutable". This indicates that the packet is not leaving the router because there is no match in the routing table for this destination. We'll configure a static default route and send the ping again.
R1#ping 22.2.2.2
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 22.2.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
U.U.U
Success rate is 0 percent (0/5)
That output may surprise those of you who are used to getting five of the same symbol back whenever you send a ping. We got three "U"s back along with two periods. We'll now run debug ip packet and send the ping again.
R1#debug ip packet
IP packet debugging is on
R1#ping 22.2.2.2
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 22.2.2.2, timeout is 2 seconds:
3d23h: IP: s=172.12.123.1 (local), d=22.2.2.2 (Serial0), len 100, sending
R1#traceroute 22.2.2.2
Type escape sequence to abort.
Tracing the route to 22.2.2.2
1 172.12.123.2 36 msec 36 msec 36 msec
2 172.12.123.2 !H * !H
R1#undebug all
All possible debugging has been turned off
Again, I've edited this output. The key word in this output is "sending", meaning that the packets are leaving the router. The ping return of "U.U.U" is a general indication that the packets are indeed being transmitted, but that a downstream router is having a problem routing the packets. Running traceroute reveals some more interesting return characters! In this case, the downstream router did not have a match for the destination in its routing table.
It's easy to concentrate on the local router when you're not getting positive ping returns. When troubleshooting this kind of issue, keep in mind the problem could be on an intermediate router and not on the local router. Use debug ip packet to make sure the packets are leaving the local router, and traceroute to determine what downstream router may have the problem. And get used to the fact that pings and traceroutes can give you some unusual-looking returns!

Getting ready for Exam 70-281
The Microsoft 70-281 test is designed for mostly IT professionals working in medium to large companies who have a complex computing environment that uses the Windows 2003 server operating system. They already have a conceptualized idea about basic project management and the Microsoft Implementation Network.
Generally, the kind of environments in which they have to be ready to work have supported users ranging from 250- 5,000+, numerous physical locations and single distributed Project Server production environment. They have standard technologies like Internet Information Services 6.0, Windows Share Point Services technology, SQL Server 2000, Project Server 2003, OLAP data services and many more.
When one appears for the test and completes it successfully, it certifies them as a Microsoft Certified Professional. Exam 70-281: Planning, Deploying, and Managing Enterprise Project Management Solutions also gives the examinee an elective credit towards the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE). The test can be taken in both English and Japanese.
Basically the aim of the 70-281 Exam is to test the abilities of the professionals in various technical tasks. The tasks include planning an enterprise project management solution deployment, implementing and configuring an EPM solution, creating a management and operations plan for the EPM solution and troubleshooting project server.
To get though this exam with flying colours it is expected from the examinees to have a basic practical training in the same technical environment where they are supposed to work. Although there are currently no facilities for e-learning and press books for the 78-281 test available with Microsoft, there are many practice tests that one can take up to sharpen their skills in preparation for it. There are also various online resources that can be utilized for studying the skills that are being measured by the test, but not all topics can be found in the online resources.
Looking for guaranteed solution to certify now? I’d recommend you try 70-281 practice exam and 70-281 exam pdf material developed by subject specialist Exams Expert. Usually, I recommend these guides to my students.

Get the best PMP certification Training
PMP stands for Project Management Professional. PMP certification is offered by PMI (Project Management Institute) and those that obtain this certification demonstrate a proficient level of project management leadership skills. PMP certification is widely recognized by major companies and government agencies worldwide as the standard qualification for the role of project managers resulting in certificate holders commanding higher salaries than the others. According to the PMI website, as of July 2008, there are more than a quarter million certified professionals around the world. Many companies require their project managers to hold this certification and is growing in popularity every day.
Ten Steps to get PMP certification
1. Make sure you meet the criteria set by PMI before deciding to apply for the PMP certification.
Eligibility criteria for applying for PMP examination
a. You should have documents to prove that you had at least 35 contact hours of formal education in project management. Read my other hub to know more on how to get the 35 contact hours for applying for PMP certification.
b. If you have a Bachelor's degree, document at least three calendar years experience in project management during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. Note that experience in all the five recognized project management process groups is required. The five process groups are Initiation, Planning, Executing, Monitoring & Control and Closing.
If you do not have a Bachelor's degree, applicants must have a minimum five years professional project management experience, during which at least 7,500 hours are spent leading and directing project tasks, within the past eight years from the time of application. Make sure to read the PMP Handbook published by PMI for more details. Note that you will have to provide the contact information of your manager or supervisor. If PMI chooses to audit your application, they will contact your manager for verification.
2. Become a member of the PMI
As of July 2008, the annual membership dues are $129. PMI members get a discount on the PMP examination fee that is bigger than the annual membership fees so it financially make sense to become a PMI member if you are planning to take the PMP exam that year. You may not want to renew it the following year if you decide you don't want it anymore. In addition to the discount, you also get an electronic copy of PMBOK guide (reading this book is essential to prepare well for the exam) and networking opportunities within the PMI community.
Do not forget to check your local PMI chapter. Explore about their activities, courses and meetings and decide if you want to become a member of the local PMI chapter. Some chapters provide PMP preparation courses and seminars which you will find very useful. It is a great opportunity to meet new and experienced PMPs in person and learn from them. You will also meet people who are preparing for the PMP exam and you can form a study group and share knowledge.
3. Apply online for PMP certification at PMI (www.pmi.org)
a. You will be filling in all the details that are mentioned in above steps (1a) and (1b) along with your personal information, educational qualification, etc.
b. PMP Examination fees: $405 for PMI members. $555 for non-members. You can use your credit card to pay for this.
Make sure the application is complete. Do not forget to attach your resume. Once you apply, it may take upto 2 weeks for your application to get approved by PMI. If you apply online, the processing time is only 5 business days.
4. Start preparing for the exam. Read the PMP Handbook again and understand all the rules. Start reading on the internet about PMP exam, experiences of recent successful PMPs, lessons learnt during the process, etc. Join various forums dedicated to PMP examination on the internet and browse through and ask questions. You can learn a lot from other successful PMPs and those who are in the same boat as you. Refer to the links section below for a list of active PMP forums.
5. Schedule a date for PMP examination: If your application is approved, instructions will be sent to you from PMI and you can schedule a date for your exam. You may not get a date immediately. So, schedule the exam date well in advance. Once your application is approved, you have one-year eligibility period in which to pass the PMP exam. During this eligibility period, you may take the examination up to three times because candidates may not pass the exam on their first attempt. There is a $150 reexamination fee. If you fail three times in a year, you must wait one year to reapply.
Check these out for more details
6. Exam preparation: Prepare rigorously for the exam. It may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months on average to prepare for the examination. I know some extreme cases where a person spent just 3 weeks preparing full-time and passed the exam.
Here are some study material that I suggest for PMP preparation and I have given the direct links to their Amazon pages on the right.
The PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) guide. It looks like about 75% of the questions on the PMP exam come from the PMBOK guide. So, make sure you study this guide again and again. However, understand that the PMBOK guide is so dry that it is raw text material only with no interesting examples and is difficult to understand. There are well written books and audio tapes I am listing below to understand the concepts given in the guide in an interesting way.
PMP Audio workshop: If you are commuting a lot or traveling for a long time, audio books are a great way to use the time effectively. Note that some audio workshops also count towards your contact hours (remember you need at least 35 contact hours on training to be eligible for the exam). I suggest PMP Prepcast as it has a lot of positive feedback from many successful PMPs.
Hot Topics Flashcards for Passing the PMP and CAPM Exams (Audio CD) by Rita Mulcahy
The PMP Exam: How to Pass On Your First Try (Test Prep series) by Andy Crowe - Great first book to read to get an idea of the PMP exam.
Rita's Course in a Book for Passing the PMP Exam by Rita Mulcahy Head First PMP: A Brain-Friendly Guide to Passing PMP Exam by Andrew Stellman and Jennifer Greene
7. Take a lot of model tests. There are a lot free PMP exam sample questions available on the internet that you should answer. Also, buy some model exams and take them as if they are real exams conducted by PMP. If you get 80% of the question right, you should be ready for the actual PMP exam.
8. Take the exam: The PMP exam is 4 hours long. Make sure you are fresh and relaxed on the day of the PMP exam. This means that you will need a good night's sleep the previous night. Have a good breakfast and drive to the testing center early. Do not forget to take your ID with you.

Microsoft has a series of exams that focus on specific aspects of computing respectively. Most of these exams are geared towards providing either elective or core credits towards the various certifications that it offers. The two main types of certifications that people usually go in for are MCSE (Microsoft Certified System Engineer) and MCSA (Microsoft Certified System Administrator). Both these certifications are quite reputed in the IT industry and are available for a number of platforms, for example Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment, and similarly for the 2000 environment etc.

Each certification from Microsoft has certain exams associated with it, and once a person clears all these exams, he/she gets the certification. After passing the 70-298 Exam, the candidate gains core credits towards MCSE on Windows Server 2003 certification. He/ she also gains core credits for the MCSE Security on Windows 2003 certification.
There is classroom training for this exam known by the name of Course 2830, and there are Microsoft Press Self- Paced Training Products also available. Besides, for practice, a person can go in for Microsoft certified practice tests by the different names. There are also a variety of Microsoft Online Resources that people can refer to. Microsoft Certification: Farewell To The MCSE
Microsoft is in the middle of a major push to overhaul its certification program. Last year, they announced the new Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA) certification, which is not a written exam but rather a practical exam that will be graded by a board of examiners. Just applying for the certification will require 10 years' experience in IT as well as three years of practical experience as a network architect.
For those of us not quite ready for that, Microsoft has announced that it's also going to revise other certifications. The MCSE that we've all come to know and love is going to be a thing of the past. In its place will be a series of specialization exams and IP Professional certification tracks.
If you're currently an MCSE exam or working it, don't worry, you have plenty of time to adapt to the new tracks. Microsoft's official word is that the new certification structure will be implemented when the next Windows server/client version is released. For those holding MCDBAs, your current certification will remain valid and you'll have a chance to upgrade to the new certification with SQL Server 2005.
Those of us who have been on the certification track for a while remember the outcry when Microsoft planned to phase out the much-maligned NT 4.0 certification in the move to Windows 2000. There was quite an outcry from many certified individuals who felt MS was being unreasonable in their timetable and planned lack of support for the 4.0 certification. Whether you agree with Microsoft's planned changes, I urge you to visit Microsoft's certification site regularly to keep up with these changes.
Whether you choose to pursue any of these new tracks is your decision, but you owe it to yourself and your career to know about the new tracks. Change is inevitable in IT and the IT certification world, and you must be aware of these changes!
Microsoft has announced major changes to its certification track, including the eventual retirement of the MCSE Training. Learn about these important details from Chris Bryant, CCIE #12933.
